On the other hand, I'm warmed by the fact that if I ever start a school, I can boot out any non-atheist/agnostics.

And yeah, private schools should be able to turn away gay students. Just like WalMart should be able to hire and fire based on someone's sexual orientation. They're a private company, right?

They also said they wanted Olivia to learn the basic tenets of Christianity, such as the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments.
Yeah, I want my kid to learn how to become a culinary genius, specializing in pork.
So I'm gonna send him to a Muslim private school. Or maybe just enroll 'em in a nice local synagogue.

*Two councilmembers estimate that charging $25 per garage sale would bring in $500,000 in the next year.*
Pls make checks payable to "Two Councilmembers LLC". Strong feeling we would never see this money even if it were legit.
*Best way to stop the mini flea markets would be to call and complain during the sale, which is what would have to happen anyway.*
Yup.

The purpose of a private school is to give parents an opportunity to send their children to a school that will teach the same values that they espouse. Obviously, there was a huge conflict here with the values and beliefs of the mothers and those of the school and, quite likely, other parents in the school. The school should have been clearer about their issues of faith and expectations of parents and students up front.
But to accuse the school of unfair discrimination is to speak against First Amendment rights of those who run the school and attend or send their children there. If this was a public school, funded by the state, it would be different and unacceptable. The minute we start legislating against freedom of religion in private schools is the minute we take away parents' rights to educate their children in an environment that encourages their values and adheres to them. Similarly, the two mothers of this child also have the right to place her in a school where their values are upheld.
And no, one cannot compare an issue about differences in belief about morality, with differences in race, physical appearance, etc. and the ramifications those have. They are simply not the same.

The mothers wanted the kid to learn about Christianity? I'd say she learned a real important lesson about it.

Seems there would be a cost incurred to enforce this, and it wouldn't be much of a deterrent for people who don't follow the rules anyway. Best way to stop the mini flea markets would be to call and complain during the sale, which is what would have to happen anyway. Please don't force more fees upon those who do right, like the fee I have to pay to own my dogs in the city of Dallas. Enforce what's on the books now before adding more unchecked regulations!

Last weekend, we counted 59 garages sales in or near our part of town and within 8 blocks of our house in all four directions. Some sales ran for one day, some for two, and some for three days. I think that 384 sales a weekend is a conservative estimate.
Posted by Granny on September 2 at 4:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Wow, there are 384 garage sales per weekend in Dallas? I really had no idea.

Two councilmembers estimate that charging $25 per garage sale would bring in $500,000 in the next year. I'm not sure if that will happen -- or what their intent is -- but that might help answer part of your question, Pavel.

$25 per garage sale isn't much money. I'd guess that the point is to be seen doing something, *anything* to address an issue.

Thanks for the wonderful review. It was a Special Night! Thanks to Delisco for inviting us to liberate ourselves from the confines of our seats- how does one sit still when Jackson music is playing? Thanks to DSO for being patient with the break in protocol. They were awesome! Hope they enjoyed it too. The diversity of the musicians and crowd was refreshing. I think Jackson would've been very pleased as he was a big fan of Classical music.

This was a terrific concert. I asked Delisco if he would be returning to Dallas one day while he signed autographs. His response was that he hoped to do a repeat performance next year with the symphony and has indicated his willingness to do so to them. It was not only fun music performed by talented enterianiers, but ones who were so enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was contagious. Way to go DSO, Delisco, Barton and all! Thank you for a memorable evening.

Regardless, what exactly is the point of the $25 fee? Will it deter people who dump a mini-Walmart on someone's lawn? Or will it just be a pain in my ass when I need to unload all the garbage I've bought over the years?

Gilligan and crew FINALLY made it off the island four years after the series ended, but then the silly geese somehow managed to get shipwrecked again right on the VERY SAME ISLAND not 30 MINUTES LATER. Ginger now had the uncanny ability to change not only her personality but into entirely different people. This may or may not have thwarted the Howells as they tried to change the island into a theme park. Later, the HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS, huge stars that they are, arrived to save the crew, including yet another Ginger and the Howell's newly born 27-year-old son, from Martin Landau. After the forehead slapping antics of the Trotters and presumably with the help from a vial of Supremium that Bob Denver had not yet snorted, the castaways found themselves briefly in outer space before returning home to where they all belonged on Broadway, of course.

Ha! Ha! You're right. I am a dedicated reality-show viewer so I was catching up with Big Brother, Real Housewives of NJ and Flipping Out. Thursday is Top Chef watching day.
And being as it is Thursday, I just watched it. Sad. Tiffany won so many times that I find it unbelievable that the judges didn't want to see what she could do in the finals. Kelly is the weakest and has been for a long time. This show never ceases to infuriate me.

Scott, sorry if my explanations weren't clear. Let me try again.
The city currently does not require a permit to have a Garage Sale. Residents are on their honor to abide by certain rules, which are meant to prevent neighborhoods from turning into flea markets every weekend.
Current city code states that each residence may have two Garage Sales a year (whether they're called Garage Sales, Yard Sales, or anything else).
The ordinance also states that the owner of the property or the lessee must be the legal owner of the items that are being sold. In addition, the ordinance states that a person cannot sell merchandise that has been bought to resell in a garage sale.
Some sellers in my neighborhood have unloaded their trucks and set up their wares on front lawns: 100 bottles of shampoo, 50 bundles of (new) socks, a dozen packages of 8-packs of toilet paper, 60 pairs of (new) sneakers, 4 huge (new) tires and three (new) toilets. These merchants are NOT residents: they are vendors who have set up a business. They operate without having to collect or pay sales tax.THESE sales are illegal.
Hope that my explanation has been helpful. At my age, I take ANY comment about approaching Alzheimer's very seriously! When YOU get old, you'll understand. And you will.
You have a good day.
